Instrument & Electrical Engineer
Purpose of the Job.
To provide overall functional design and drafting on projects from conception through construction and start-up, relying chiefly upon knowledge, input from operations/maintenance/company, and judgment to interpret and apply information (regulations/code/etc).
Position is also the focal point for site instrument and electrical issues, such as electrical training, power distribution, company requirements/mandates, trouble-shooting (including PLC), etc.
Work to be performed both independently and in conjunction with multi-discipline, cross-functional Project Teams.
Position will also, at times, supervise and coordinate contract I&E Designers, Electrical Engineers, or Electrical Contractors.
Performs design work and field/project coordination on assigned portion of electrical systems, instrumentation & control of new unit construction. Also will perform same for complete/total project, when appropriate.
Gathers a wide range of design and engineering data, such as equipment specifications, applicable codes, design principles and standards related to specific projects.
Applies all applicable codes, company policies, safety and other standards necessary to produce functional designs and drawings. This necessitates being familiar with specifications and drawings, drafting room procedures, indexes, vendor drawings and technical data books.
Acts as the site contact (focal point) for electrical systems, instrument, and control issues (standards, training, upkeep & improvement, etc.), working with electricians, I&E technicians, vendor representatives, and corporate maintenance/engineering personnel.
Determines quantity, size and type of material to accomplish desired function. Applies practices and standards relating to electrical design of plant facilities.
Prepares engineering drawings of electrical instruments for all phases of plant construction.
Determines and executes any additions and or modifications to electrical, instrument, P&I, and loop diagrams.
Obtains necessary information from files, tracings, blueprints and field surveys required for final drawings/as builds.
Maintains the necessary files of field information for each project and works with others concerning where changes, obstructions or discrepancies occur on the working drawings.
Participates in site instrument/electrical trouble-shooting efforts as needed.
Requirements, Knowledge and Experience.
Licensed Instrument & Electrical Engineer P.E.O. with 4-8 years of related practical experience in the Chemical Industry.
PLC Programming experience would be an asset.
Familiarity/understanding of electrical design and applicable codes.
Working knowledge of plant construction methods, drafting and design procedures (instrument/electrical and preferably mechanical/civil/structural/refrigeration). Proficient with computer aided design/drafting systems.
Demonstrated willingness to perform in a team environment and with little routine supervision.
Demonstrated ability to supervise or coordinate field activities (contractors, etc.)
